Behind Closed Doors
Artist Statement:
Using 3D animation in a 360 virtual reality setting, Behind Closed Doors recreates a hallway and set of rooms that act as a visual representation of my mind and memories. Using only my memory of my bedrooms from various times in my life, the virtual spaces are reconstructed in ways that directly correlate with the feelings and emotions I felt during the time I spent in them. Inspired by the environmental storytelling and worldbuilding that is often seen in video games, I am displaying this work through the medium of VR as a way for the viewer to be fully immersed within the space, to explore an interest in the relationship between the body and mind, and to connect with the memories and emotions of my past.
This piece had its debut at the Indiana University Southeast BFA Thesis Exhibition: Stagnant Echoes in Spring 2023.
For this exhibition, the piece was shown in both a VR headset, and projected onto two walls and a custom projection screen.
A variation of this piece, adapted for viewing on a CRT monitor, has also been shown at the 2023 Juried Fine Arts Student Exhibition.
